Birth Order is a chronological outline of siblings’ birth in families. Whether you are the only child, first, middle, or the last-born, it is said that birth order can have a major impact on your behavior and personality. So, what are some of the expected traits of children as per the birth order idea?
Firstborns In Birth Order
They are the leaders of the pack and are considered as co-parents or mini-adults because of the roles they are expected to play. Firstborns are usually diligent and try to be the best at all things they do. Generally, there are performers when it comes to winning the hearts of elders. They tend to be:
- Supporters of authority (parents)
- Task-oriented and
Because firstborns look after the other siblings, they are good at mentoring and leadership roles. Studies show that they have higher academic achievement compared to the other siblings. This could be because they are usually exposed to the adult language and interactions while they are still young. Firstborns tend to choose careers which need precision and they are mostly found in fields such as medicine, computer science, law, science, accounting, or engineering.
Second-borns and Other Middle Children In Birth Order
Note that second-borns are also middle kids. According to the birth order, most middle children usually feel like they are left out in every sense. Remember that they do not possess so much authority and this means that they can be competitive with firstborns. They don’t get so much parental attention and not so much is expected from them unlike the firstborns so some of them may decide to channel all their energies in different areas. Because they are striving for roles and attention, they tend to be innovative and do unique things which make them stand out in the dynamics of the family. Generally, they possess the following characteristics.
- They thrive in social spaces
- Have large social friendships
- Are somehow rebellious
Note that middle children often feel like they are overlooked or forgotten so they have many friends and a large social circle to cater to this parental deficit. They normally find comfortable spaces in social order and they rebel in order to draw parental attention to themselves. In some instances, they may end up becoming bullies.
Lastborns In Birth Order
They are the “babies”. The ones that deserve all the good things in the world. Because they are usually nurtured with many family members, they mostly have strong coping and social skills. It’s for this reason that most lastborns may attain certain milestones while they are still young. According to the Birth Order, lastborns are socially successful and they have the highest form of self-esteem compared to the other birth positions. They possess characteristics like:
- Attention seekers
Lastborns may also feel physically weak and powerless. As a result, they tend to be manipulative in order to transfer the power order and become untouchable bosses of the family.
There are some instances where there is only one child. Well, these ones have the characteristics of the firstborns and lastborns. (It’s because they are the first and the last…). They have problems when it comes to relating to their peers because they have grown with adults only. Everything belongs to them and they are self-centered. Some of their characteristics include:
- Very mature for their own age
This is a unique birth order position because there are no other siblings. As a result, they normally have the monopoly of the parent’s attention as well as resources. At some point, they can be super firstborns but other times they are attention seeking lastborns. Only Children have the privilege of having all the support from their parents and the burden of attaining all the expectations. It’s fun and demanding being the only kid. I mean, you are spoiled and pampered like the lastborn you are and still expected to be a performer and a leader like the firstborn you are.
But what about twins or triplets? What is their birth order? Well, the birth order idea simply focuses on the 5 ordinal positions i.e. only child, first, second, middle, and last-born. But because there is the firstborn twin or firstborn triplet and so on, they can take the personality traits that are outlined in the birth order positions. For instance, the first twin is expected to have the personality of a firstborn and the last triplet should have the personality of the lastborn.
